Day 4: Think outside the frame

Description

A self-portrait. Golly I need a new tripod.

Day 4:

Began the day with a 'coffee' meeting with one of my actors. I say 'coffee' because I actually can't drink caffeine. I had an ice chocolate. Very sophisticated. He is one of my cast for my Adelaide Fringe show. I only cast him a couple of days ago and he hadn't read any of the material. It was a chance for me to try and get him excited. We sat down and had a long chat about what I wanted to make, how I wanted to make it (I want co-writers and co-creators, not simply actors or dancers) and about Adelaide. I then had him read a few monologues for me:

'I don't think I am the lead in this story. I think I'm more like the sub-plot. An aside. Mum and Dad now they are the real deal the ones that matter tune in next week to find out what Daphne and Robert did next.

Daphne tosses her hair back from her face she is planning what to accuse Robert of next what bombshell to drop on the kitchen table over the mashed potatos and roast lamb.

The click click click of her daughter typing away upstairs tried talking to her told her to get a job get outside get some exercise doesn't work doesn't want to help herself what's a mother to do?

A split end. Daphne wonders if she should change her shampoo.'

They are difficult to read because of my newly found fondness for removing unnecessary punctuation. The only help I can offer is to treat each full stop like a pause. He reads it 40 times better than I ever could have. That is why I love actors.

He is passionate about the project and is very excited to begin writing his own work. I leave telling myself I am a god of casting.

A meeting with my set designer. We talk desk lamps. The lighting in the theatre we're performing is pretty shocking so we've decided to create a set which lights itself. Four desk lamps. That leaves plenty of room for dance and the actors can manipulate them themselves. I am a lighting designer so I talk a lot about the different possibilities this would present.

I get a phone call. I was meant to be seeing a show this evening but a friend who was meant to be life modeling has sunstroke. I take her job. It is a hot day. Good night to be naked among strangers.

I lie nude in the middle of an art classroom. Twenty strangers study me. Oil pastel. Soft pastel. Charcoal. Scratching away. Sweat runs down my back and drips onto the floor. Three five minute studies. Four ten minutes. Two twenty minutes. I plan a duologue.

The resulting pictures are stunning. One woman is drawing left handed after an injury. I can not even write my name with my left hand. One woman adds about 30 kilos to my weight. A man takes away 20.

I come home. Shoot this. Kristina and I set out for our run but she does something to a muscle 200 meters in. She didn't stretch. We walk to the oval and I sprint a lap by myself. We go to the play equipment and discuss how uncomfortable it would be to have sex on. We watch possums march up and down the big trees.

Your self portrait here is probably one of my favorites ever. Such nice colors. What a warm, beautiful piece!
