Shooting your host during rehearsals for my latest play.

I rehearsed the show in my living room so I absolutely love this shot for capturing that.

How interesting. Kind of like a reality show of some sort. =)

Haha, I agree. From time to time it does occur to me that someone should do a reality show just following a bunch of artists around but maybe that appeals to me only because I'm an artist and that would be very boring for the rest of the community.

But I do love how Shauna documented these. I feel very lucky to have them.

Well it makes sense considering you're also a director too if I'm not mistaken.

I am, yes. Writer and director is my main job.

That's great. What inspired you to be one (or both?)

Oh that's going back a few years. I think it started when I won a young playwright competition. The prize was to have my (truly terrible) play workshopped for a week by the State Theatre Company. Up to that point I had been focusing mostly on classical music but that week showed me how joyous theatre was. It is about collaboration and telling stories about what is important to you and I just loved that. As a director you get to guide all these many individuals to tell one single story. That blows my mind. I can't think of a better job.

I focused mostly on directing whilst at uni but when I finished I discovered that I was the cheapest playwright I know so I started writing again. :)

I see. It's true director do not only guide the audience but the actors/actresses of how the story is portrayed. Whether it's an action movie or critically acclaimed play, it's the director's vision that comes to life. An interesting story on how you managed to get to where you are now. Perhaps, we can learn from each other in terms of plays and such.

Definitely. It is about having one cohesive vision of what the story is, why you are telling it and how you will tell it. That one vision is made up of a lot of people and that is what I love about the collaboration but it needs someone to tie it together. This week I've been doing a development of a new script of mine with a group of actors. They have been just amazing. So incredibly generous and passionate about this new baby. I just love theatre people.

Very badly. But I'm a singer so I mostly use it for learning music and holding rehearsals at my house.
