Twisted up

Description

Self-portrait number 32 of my 52 self-portrait project.

Lighting:

Off-camera flash is to my right, pointed directly at me (rather than up to the ceiling or defuse in any way).

On-camera flash is covered with a brown paper bag to defuse it and give that warm light.

I enjoyed this set a lot. :)

I'm very excited right now: don't tell anyone but I'm heading back to Adelaide next week for my sister's wedding. :D:D:D:D Our entirely family will be together for the first time in a fair while. One of my sisters lives in Canada in Ottawa where she is doing her Masters in Medieval Studies. The other (the one getting married) lives in London and Paris with her partner. They are music academics and concert pianists specialising in late 19th/early 20th century French music. They just received a massive three year long grant to work on Faure's song cycles for the Royal Academy of Music in London to produce a new edition.

I can't say how excited I am to be seeing them all soon! It is very strange that they are all in Adelaide now and I have to wait until Tuesday to see them!

Predictably, when they arrived, my beagle, Solace cried with joy whilst my sister's beagle (who worships her but he isn't too bright) said 'hello' to my parents first (who he lives with) said a passing 'hello' to the visitors and went to check out the compost bin. He's remembered her now and is back to following her around the house, lying outside the toilet door to wait for her.

Happyhappyhappy.

There is in fact a twist to this triptycal piece that is so subtle that if it was not referenced in the title most would not probably notice the twisting nature that exists. That is perhaps the least of points of interest of this particular image.

The artist's comments describe the lighting and the results of that set-up really do play a large part in the story that is told.

The real story is what is going on with those hands. How often is it that you are blessed with one image that contains three images of a nude female torso and what stops you in your tracks is the hands that are attached to that torso by the owners arms.

It is so interesting how the hand positions of the top and bottom image are nearly identical but shot from two different positions 90º apart. Seeing those hand poses that are so similar from these different vantage points show to different emotions or actions... the top one is an attempt to reach out while the bottom one is much more greedy as it is about to grab something...

the middle image that is most different different of the two, presents us with hands that sensitive and searching till they so gently touch.

again the lighting really sets the mood for these hands perfectly... both harsh from the side and soft from the front... the harsh and filtered are so interesting.

the only thing that i would have done differently was to either butt the images right up against each other and gotten rid of the white line between or i would have given the same as what is around the outside border.

lastly i have to say that the torso did not go unnoticed, in fact it was the perfect back drop to the tale the hands have told.

well done.
